How to Diagnose & Replace your PCV Valve for Honda/Acura

In today's video, I will be showing you how to diagnose and replace a PCV Valve. I will be demonstrating this on my 2002 Acura TL-S. This process can apply to pretty much any PCV Valve on any Honda or Acura vehicle, with the exception that it may be located in different areas on different cars.

HOW THE PCV SYSTEM and PCV VALVE WORK:
The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system has three main functions; to prevent excessive pressure in the engine crankcase, to prevent fuel vapors from mixing with the engine oil, and to prevent the release of harmful fuel vapors into the atmosphere.

During the compression cycle of the engine combustion process, a small amount of fuel vapor will leak past the piston rings into the engine crankcase. These fuel vapors are called blow-by gases. If left in the crankcase, this could cause an unhealthy mixture of fuel and engine oil and damage the engine. To prevent this from happening, these fuel vapors are sucked out of the crankcase through a one-way PCV Valve. Instead of releasing these harmful vapors into the atmosphere, they are instead rerouted back into the cylinders where they can be burned during engine combustion and filtered through the exhaust system.

So what can happen if you have a bad PCV Valve? If the valve is stuck open, this can cause the system to suck not only the fuel vapors but also the engine oil where it then gets rerouted to the engine cylinders and is burned. This is one major reason why many older cars may start burning/consuming excessive oil. This can also mess with air/fuel ratios and result in difficulty starting the engine, rough idling, power loss, poor acceleration, and excessive smoke coming out of the exhaust.

If the valve is stuck closed, this prevents the fuel vapors from escaping the crankcase thus increasing the internal pressure and will cause premature wear and tear to the engine gaskets and create oil leaks.

If you have any of these symptoms, you should immediately check your PCV Valve. Simply remove the PCV valve and shake it. You should effortlessly and clearly hear a metallic clicking/rattling sound coming from inside the valve. If you cannot easily replicate the clicking sound as shown in this video, do not attempt to clean or fix it, replace it immediately! It's cheap and easy enough to replace and ensures the best performance and longevity from your engine.

Parts Used in this Video:
- Valve Assembly, PCV - Acura (17130-PY3-003)
- Grommet, PCV Valve - Acura (17139-PK1-000)

Other PCV Valves used on other Honda & Acura Vehicles:
- PCV Valve (17130-PK1-003) Add Grommet to your cart
- PCV Valve (17130-RCA-A02) Comes with the 2 O-Rings
- PCV Valve (17130-RYE-A01) Comes with the 2 O-Rings
- PCV Valve (17130-PND-A01) Add 14mm Washer (94109-14000) to your Cart, torque to 33 ft.lbs

PCV Valves that use a grommet or washer do not automatically come with one. Make sure to add one to your cart! You do not need to add O-Rings to your cart for PCV valves that use those.
