Food Possession & Temperament of Lions Leopards Cheetahs & Dogs | Big Cat & Dog Stand Off

Incredible difference between lions, leopards, cheetahs and dogs temperaments based on food possession. I show a brief outline of the differences and close with a typical reaction cheetahs have when they want something but something else has it. Food possession aggression exists in all predators and even prey... through territoriality, aggression, and even the willingness to kill, but acting on those feelings are far less likely with cheetahs.

Kenji and Fiela both are rewarded with a nice antelope leg and happily feeding on it when something startles them and they bolt! They return to their food and to their dismay, two of the compounds dogs have already claimed the meal.

Fiela, being a veteran adult cheetah, gives up immediately and out of the picture. Kenji, only two years old, knows his boundaries with the dogs and even knows which dog he has the best chances of retrieving his leg. The brown dog, Tara, is the MOST intolerant of cheetahs so he skips her and tries his chances at his better friend... Chloe.

I find cheetah temperament a fascinating subject. Cheetahs are noticeably non aggressive by nature. They are vulnerable to injuries due to their long legs and weakened bodies that sacrifice strength for speed. Their mindset is to flee from a fight rather than to face one. The reward has to outweigh the risks by many fold before they will. One bone is not worth getting a lip bit by Chloe.

It does not matter that Kenji could tear apart Chloe easily... in his mind, that is not even an option. For one, he grew up with Chloe and respects and likes her. She is family and cheetahs don't kill family. That is due to their nature.

Cheetahs in the wild will fight each other for territory, mates, and food, but rarely any other predator... even small ones that can bite back. An injury that prevents them from running is a death sentence. They lose battles to leopards and hyenas. Forget lions.

Just to reveal a interesting statistic, no human in recorded history has been killed by a wild cheetah in the wild. Their mind and body are designed to flee rather than fight. It is one of the best things about them to me.
