“I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day”

Every time I hear this hymn, the repeating chorus of “peace on earth, goodwill to men” hits me like a ton of bricks. Is it really so foolish to hope for such a thing? Is it too lofty a thing for pragmatic people to truly believe in? Let’s be honest: peace and goodwill can feel a long way off in the hell on earth that humanity creates for itself, time and time again, and it can be almost a comfort to let the gravity of our cynicism take over, as we take in the reality of our immediate circumstances.

I can’t remember the exact quote, but I try to remind myself in those times that the very sorrow I feel is, in and of itself, the proof that the end of that terrible situation has not yet been reached. And we know all earthly things come to an end. The quote is something like: “It hurts only because it’s not over yet.” The juxtaposition of ultimate hope against the depths to which we can sink, is so beautifully and heartbreakingly captured in this song, and I can’t think of any better way to close out this album.
