I was 12 years old in 1989 when “Right Here Waiting” blew up my radio, and I was instantly captivated by Richard Marx’s sound. I think I knew already that I could have a voice similar to his one day, if I kept at my music, which was already my first love. As a kid trying to figuring how to push my voice further, I was mesmerized by Marx’s high tenor and that well-worn, biting, airy grit that is, for me, the touchstone his sound. I remember trying to match him through the entirety of Repeat Offender, even though my undeveloped vocal cords couldn’t keep up, and I’d cough wildly while trying to add rasp to my voice prematurely.

I love so many of his songs - “Should’ve Known Better,” “Angelia,” “Hazard,” “Now And Forever,” the haunting “Children Of The Night,” and more. But, of course, it had to be “Right Here Waiting.” It’s the one that introduced me to his music, and made me rush to the piano to see if I could figure out how to play it, just by listening. I’d play it for my friends, and I quickly figured out that the lady folk were SUPER into it. Huge bonus! So thanks for that, Richard. And thanks for all the great music.
