A recent report from the New York Times explains just how valuable those weekly FPUC $600 unemployment benefits through the CARES Act were to millions of Americans.

The report shows that back in May, these CARES Act disaster relief funds kept 18 million Americans out of poverty.

But by September, when the additional $600 ran out, the funds were only saving 4 million people from poverty.

Zachary Parolin, an author of the study from Columbia University explained: “The Cares Act was unusually successful, but now it’s gone, and a lot more people are poor.”

Estimates show that since May, the amount of poor people living in America has grown by roughly 8 million.

We need our politicians to pass additional extended enhanced unemployment benefits to help the millions of struggling Americans get back on their feet.

Meanwhile, a huge unemployment fraud scheme has landed 10 people with charges for attempts to defraud unemployment systems in Arizona, California and Nevada.

These 10 people are being charged with stealing over $1.2 million on over 50 prepaid debit cards that are used to distribute unemployment benefits.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada Nicholas Trutanich wanted to “turn up the heat,” explaining: “Stop trying to exploit the system. Our office will be prioritizing unemployment fraud going forward because prompt payments or benefits can make a big difference to Nevadans who need help.”

With the Labor Department estimating over $26 billion of funds that have been lost to fraud across the country, this is an important issue that I hope doesn’t get in the way of the thousands of people awaiting unemployment benefits and caught up in the bureaucracy.

Finally, details are starting to emerge over both the Democrats and Republicans plans for handling extended enhanced unemployment benefits into the new year.

We know that the Dems are holding their ground at weekly $600 unemployment benefits, backdated to September, and lasting until January 2021.

But what about the Republicans that are making efforts to compromise?

According to the Wall St Journal, the latest deal from the GOP allegedly ups their previous claim, keeping the weekly amount at $400, but extending the benefits until January 2021 and still providing back pay until September.

With the previous proposal ending benefits at the end of 2020, hopefully these minor details can get both sides on board with these vital unemployment benefits soon.

If you still haven’t applied for unemployment assistance, this weekend is the perfect time to get your application in before it’s too late.

Please visit your state’s PUA or UI website, provide them with your employment documents, and tell them you are out of work due to that thing out there.
