Lawmakers from the great state of Michigan put in overtime last night, talking into early Wednesday to ensure the protection of unemployment benefits for your state’s citizens.

The Michigan House and Senate approved legislation that protects unemployment benefits for the thousands of residents currently collecting these vital funds.

The Republican-run state Legislature and House Speaker Lee Chatfield announced at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, that a deal had been reached with the Democratic administration.

The session concluded shortly after 3 a.m., when they approved liability and unemployment aid bills.

We already knew Michigan was cool, as we talked previously about them offering residents 59 weeks of unemployment benefits, but this takes it over the top.

Thanks for looking out for your citizens Michigan, now if only the other 49 states would do the same thing!

Meanwhile, we’ve talked on this channel countless times about how the unemployment rate is not a great indicator of the “true” amount of Americans currently unemployed.

According to Axios, if you define an unemployed citizen as ”A person who is looking for a full-time job that pays a living wage — but who can't find one,” the real unemployment rate could be as high as 26.1%.
The report shows that the official unemployment rate does not take into account low-wage employees, Americans that have stopped seeking work, those that are discouraged by a lack of jobs, or by the demands of child care.

Gene Ludwig, a former U.S. Comptroller of the Currency, stated: "I was shocked. That a quarter of the population that want work can't earn a living wage."

These shocking statistics should show Congress just how badly millions of Americans still require extended enhanced unemployment benefits.

Finally, as so many of you out there know, it can be a daily fight just to get the unemployment benefits that you are entitled to receive.

A recent article from NPR shows just how many people are being caught up in the bureaucracy and how you can avoid landing in the same kind of mess.

Jennifer Pahlka, a top technology adviser in the Obama White House and the founder of the nonprofit Code for America, explained: "If you applied for unemployment assistance, you had a 40% chance of getting flagged for manual processing."

She continued: "Sadly, they haven't been protecting the system from much fraud. They catch very few people. Less than half of 1% of people are caught as fraudulent through this tactic."

So how can unemployment claimants get their applications through their state’s systems smoothly?

Pahlka says that in some states: “people can verify their identity quickly when they apply just using their phone. Applicants take a photo of their ID and send in a selfie. They're asked questions only they would know how to answer. The software does the verification rather than overworked staff members.”

I hope this helps anyone out there that is still waiting to apply for your initial unemployment benefits.

If that’s you, please visit your state’s PUA or UI website, give them your employment history, or lack thereof, and tell them you are out of work due to that thing out there.

It will all be worth it when you receive your backdated unemployment check, which could be for more than $10,000!
