Oxyaenids: Early Cat Mimics
Oxyaenids were an early lineage of carnivorous Laurasiatherian mammals native to the northern hemisphere during the Palaeocene and Eocene. Once thought to be members of Creodonta, alongside the Hyeanodonts, recent studies have placed them in a more basal position within Ferae. Oxyaenids were somewhat cat-like ambush hunters, possessing massive skulls, crushing dentition and, in some cases, sabre-like canines. The group fared poorly during the Later Eocene, dying out before the transition to the Oligocene.
