Do We Control Our Happiness?
How much influence do we REALLY have over how happy we are?
We've been through a lot in the last year. So many things have happened *to* us, things we have no control over, that have had a huge impact on our lives. After all that, it's natural to ask ourselves a simple question: How much of our happiness do we actually control?
Edit: Since I made the video, brand new research was published suggesting that "experienced well-being" continues to rise as income increases above $75,000/year [https://www.pnas.org/content/118/4/e2016976118]
Cited Research:
- Pursuing Happiness: The Architecture of Sustainable Change [https://escholarship.org/content/qt4v03h9gv/qt4v03h9gv.pdf]

- Twin studies find that identical twins raised in different households are more similar in their level of happiness than fraternal twins raised in the same household [https://media.rickhanson.net/Papers/SubjectiveWell-BeingDiener.pdf]
- Well-being decouples from income at ~$75,000/year [https://www.pnas.org/content/107/38/16489]
- Circumstantial factors that most consistently predict high subjective well being [https://rb.gy/laffov]
- Some research suggests that genetic factors control as much as 70-80% of our subjective well-being [https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10902-016-9781-6]
