Images of Ireland / Raglan Road (Performed by Loreena McKennitt)

There's nothing like St. Patrick's Day to bring out the Irish in everyone, including me. My maternal ancestors hailed from County Cork, and I yearn to see it firsthand someday. Until then, I can only experience Ireland through images and music (and I guess an occasional Guinness). This is what motivated me in large measure to put together this video.

The song used here is Raglan Road, which was derived from a poem named "On Raglan Road" written in 1946 by Patrick Kavanagh. The poem was set to the music of the traditional song "The Dawning of the Day" by The Dubliners, a popular Irish band, some years later. The song has become very popular and has been covered by the likes of Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor, and Mark Knopfler.

The performance used here is by Loreena McKennitt, a popular Canadian singer and instrumentalist who has sold over 14 million records worldwide. She is of Irish decent and has a keen grasp of the Celtic musical tradition. Her rendition of Raglan Road gives me goose bumps.

Hopefully, the montage of photographs of the Irish landscape and culture which I cobbled together here is worthy of the soundtrack.

None of the images used in this video are mine. Rather they were gleaned from various internet web sites. To the best of my knowledge, these images are in the public domain and/or their use for this purpose is covered by the Fair Use Act. This video was not made for commercial use or for profit, and no copyright infringement is intended.

I hope you enjoy the video. Top of the morning!
