Carol of the Bells (Performed by George Winston)

The music for this beloved Christmas Carol was composed by Mykola Leontovych in 1904. The song is based on a Ukrainian folk chant, and is well known for its four-note ostinato motif. The simplicity of this motif gives the piece a highly adaptive quality, and it has been performed in any number of musical genres, and lyrics exist supporting choral treatments.

The solo piano arrangement and performance provided here is by George Winston, who attained huge commercial success recording for the Windham Hill label in the 1980’s. This selection is from his “December” release, which sold over one million copies in the United States alone.
