Ken Fisher: Enjoy the Bull Market in 2021, but Be Vigilant About the End
Ken Fisher recognizes the early 2020 market downturn as a technical bear market but says it may be akin to an oversized market correction, which changes how he thinks about stocks in 2021.
Ken believes the market is acting more like an extension of the 11-year bull market that started in 2009, and the latter years of a bull market often feature very positive returns. On the political front, 2021 features a Democratic president’s inaugural year, which tend to surprise to the upside as investors’ fears tied to potential anti-business legislation prove overblown. Ken Fisher has spoken about this phenomenon at length and coined it the “perverse inverse.” Further, U.S. political gridlock seems set to reign with razor-thin Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress, a bullish feature for stocks.
Some fear the market is approaching euphoric sentiment. Ken acknowledges investor sentiment is heating up, but he doesn’t think it’s euphoric yet. Once investor optimism starts accelerating late in a bull market, it tends to do that for a while. Ken encourages investors to enjoy the heightened investor optimism in 2021, but beware the tendency to get greedy at this stage.
