I Pronounce Spanish Texas Town Names | Cómo se pronuncian los nombres en español en Texas

Did you know there's a place where pronouncing Spanish words incorrectly is okay? It's Texas. And most of the American Southwest! When it comes to Texas town names, many of them are actual Spanish words with real Spanish meanings, but over the years, The Texas accent and the approximate pronunciation that the English-speaking settlers used has become the normal way to pronounce the Spanish words.

And even if you do speak Spanish in Texas, you're more than likely to pronounce the names of these Texas towns, rivers, and counties with their English pronunciation. We all grew up hearing the names of these Texas towns with their pronunciations that have nothing to do with the way they're said in Spanish, and even newcomers to Texas from other parts of the country and the world find themselves having to learn how to say "Amarillo" or "Rio Grande" (or Humble or Gruene) the Texan way.

In this video, I'll be pronouncing these Spanish words in Spanish and comparing them to how we pronounce these Texas town and place names. I don't mention all the Spanish place names since it's a loooong list, and I am not familiar with how all of them are pronounced! Hay muchos que piensan que en Texas hablan español, y en parte tienen razón. Pero la verdad es que todo el español que se habla en Texas se debe al hecho de que hay muchas familias de ascendencia hispana. No se suele ver a un gringo hablando español, y no es como si todos los niños de famlias angloparlantes fueran a clases de españos desde chiquito. Ojalá existiera ese costumbre de aprender español por parte de los angloparlantes porque 1. creo que el plurilingüismo es beneficioso para el ser humano, y 2. fomentaría el entendimiento intercultural entre estas dos grandes comunidades que tienen tanta influencia sobre la cultura actual e histórica de Texas.

¿Por qué menciono el idioma que se habla en Texas? Porque a pesar de ser formado por palabras en español, los nombres de algunos lugares en Texas se pronuncian de una manera singular que no tiene nada que ver con su pronuciación en español.

Hoy hago una comparación entre la pronunciación correcta (jaja a mi manera) de estas palabras en español y su pronuciación correcta en texano. No menciono a todos los lugares con nombres españoles ya que son muchos y porque no estoy familiarizada con la pronunciación de todos estos nombres.
