Japanese Goblin Yokai Parade - Shimokitazawa Tengu Festival: Setsubun 節分 下北沢天狗まつり

Tengu Festival of Shimokitazawa is a Setsubun event where supernatural beings known as Tengu parade down the street to bring luck and prosperity to people and businesses. Setsubun is an event where they celebrate the changing of the seasons. It's now on February 3rd but it used to be New Year's Eve on the old lunar calendar. On that day people throw beans to drive out bad luck in the form of oni (demons/ogres) and welcome good luck into their homes by saying "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" ("Devils out! Good Luck In!")

At Shimokitazawa Tengu Festival they only say "Fuku wa Uchi!" as they throw the beans. The festival still adheres to the old calendar and takes place when the Chinese New Year happens. The night before Tengu visit local businesses to bless them.

In the evening I came across a dance troupe dressed as oni doing tricks and break dancing. I had to distort the sound a bit with music from the audio library as they were playing copyright songs.

This was from several years ago before the Plague Times.
