How to Layout and Cut Stairs Efficiently
I've always enjoyed framing stairs. In our area, stairs are nearly always built by the framers and usually covered in carpet. Layout isn't difficult, but there are some important points to remember. Check your local code for min/max riser and tread heights/depth. Whatever you use for riser material needs to be subtracted off the back of the top riser, and whatever you use for the tread needs to be subtracted off the bottom of the first (bottom) tread. Depending on finish materials this may need to be adjusted further.
I prefer to skip the square and use a pitch block to lay out the riser/treads. Gang cutting with the Makita 10 1/4" XGT and finishing the cuts with a jigsaw is the most productive method I've used to date. I used to use the big Skil 16 5/16" saw but frankly its slow and too heavy. Using the method in the video you can get identical or nearly identical stringers.
My preference is to use 2x8 risers because they don't shrink, cup, check, split or crack. They each act like a little "beam" across the stair right where people walk. No perceptible deflection and combined with gluing, makes for a "bomber" stair as @buildshow would say.
In part two we'll actually assemble the stairs. Please remember I'm not showing the best way to do something, but rather the current method that works well for me.
