Hansel & Gretel Forest Scene (Frederica von Stade & Judith Blegen)

Another "Christmas" opera excerpt for your viewing pleasure. The sheer spookiness of this piece still makes me think more of Halloween, but who am I to subvert an age-old tradition? (Though I do, often.)
In this quintessential production from 1982, Merril & O'Hearn create a fantastical world full of wonder, creatures, chills, and magic. No production will top this one in my humble opinion. Though I may be a bit biased--not only was it my first Hansel and Gretel production, it was one of my first operas, period. Still, one can't deny the imagination and delight this production exudes. The leading ladies in this scene absolutely sell the experience of two mischievous children who get the fright of their life (though just wait till Act 3, poor kids).
