Il primo giudice...Volta la terrea (Heidi Stober)

Oscar is definitively one of the most precious trouser roles in opera. Heidi Stober gives us a particularly sassy portrayal in the San Francisco Opera's luscious 2014 production. Teamed up with Ramón Vargas as Gustavo and Thomas Hampson as Renato, the devoted page follows true trouser role tradition as he defends the mezzo against the suspicious male politicians.
I especially love how sassy Oscar is to the Judge, who's just trying to get his job done. Stober's Oscar knows how to take charge and own the room, and few people question his authority.
Every time I watch this opera, the deceptively lighthearted, charming opening almost makes me forget that it's actually a tragedy. In the meantime, I'm happy to revel in Oscar's sweetness and sass.
