ALBANIA: KOSOVO CRISIS: US APACHE HELICOPTERS ARRIVE
Natural Sound
The second wave of U-S Apache helicopters arrived in Tirana on Sunday to bolster NATO's ability to strike Serbian targets in Kosovo.
The eight helicopters arrived in the Albanian capital as NATO Supreme Commander for Europe Wesley Clark was meeting alliance troops.
The American attack helicopters are expected to be used initially against Serb targets in southwestern Kosovo.
After being delayed because of bad weather, the eight Apaches finally arrived at their new base in Tirana on Sunday.
They are the second wave of Apaches to reach Albania.
The United States is sending 24 Apaches to the region to join NATO's air campaign against Yugoslavia.
An additional two-thousand troops are also being deployed to protect them.
The tank-busting helicopters are expected to be more effective than fighter jets in targeting the highly mobile Serbian troops in the province.
Since the airstrikes began, Serbia has dispersed its forces in Kosovo - often camouflaging tanks to make them difficult to detect at high altitudes.
The low-flying Apaches are among the most lethal tank-killers in the NATO arsenal, each armed with 16 Hellfire missiles, 70 mm rockets and a 30mm cannon that fires 625 rounds per minute.
However, while the assault helicopters will be more effective in taking out individual units, there is a higher risk of them being shot down.
The Apaches' arrival coincided with a visit by NATO's Supreme Commander for Europe, Wesley Clark.
He touched down in Tirana to meet some of the 20-thousand NATO troops stationed in the country.
As well as carrying out military duties, some alliance soldiers have also taken on a humanitarian role, assisting the hundreds of thousands of ethnic Albanian refugees who have flooded into Albania from Kosovo.
