KOSOVO: GNIJLANE: ARRIVAL OF US NATO TROOPS

(13 Jun 1999) English/Nat

U-S troops moved into the southeast Kosovo town of Gnjilane on Sunday to secure a position for what will become a base for 600 marines.

The area lies in the U-S-designated sector for NATO's K-FOR peacekeeping force.

The marines flew in with helicopters and positioned soldiers in nearby fields, wary of passing convoys of Serb trucks carrying soldiers and ammunition on their way out of Kosovo.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
"My job is to post security along this road. In case of any approach by the enemy I can suppress them and this is the best weapon of doom we got."
SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop, U-S Marine

About 100 to 150 U-S troops in armoured vehicles crossed into Kosovo at Blace, Macedonia, in the first significant U-S force to join five thousand NATO peacekeepers already in the province.
