Piano Tales: History of the early piano #5: Early Viennese grand pianos, Mozart and early Beethoven

In this episode a very early anonymous German (?) pianoforte from ca. 1785 is compared with a Viennese fortepiano by Michael Rosenberger from around 1800. See how rapidly the early piano of Mozart’s day evolved.
Riko Fukuda plays J. Haydn: Adagio from Piano Sonata Hob. XVI:6, W.A. Mozart: Sonata in E flat major KV 281, 1st. Movement Adagio, and - L. von Beethoven: Sonata (Moonlight) no.14 op. 27-2, 1st movement, Adagio sostenuto.

Edwin Beunk is an internationally acclaimed restorer and collector of early pianos. In the course of time it transpired that a new world opened up for many when they came to view the collection, amateur players, students, and professionals alike, even for some world famous pianists. Therefore Edwin Beunk decided to create a number of documentary films about the history of the early piano, in collaboration with filmmaker Patrick Drijver and pianist Riko Fukuda.
