Restoring a fortepiano for the Carl Bechstein Foundation 12 Warming procedure to straighten the case

The case is being packed with insulation material at the inside and a pile of blankets on the outside. Early in the morning we start raising the temperature slowly up to 70 degrees celsius. After about 6 or 7 hours the glueing clamps can be carefully tightened, bit by bit over the hours. Late in the evening we switch the heating off. By that time the piano has become straight.

Since 2019 the Carl Bechstein Foundation in Berlin is building up a collection of historical keyboard instruments, reflecting the history of the piano. All instruments will be in perfect playing condition and in this film-series you'll see the whole proces of a restoration, starting from a total wreck. This fortepiano was built around 1795 in Vienna by Ferdinand Hofmann (1756-1829).
