ABOUT THIS VIDEO

If you're trying to strengthen your shoulder, there's an important movement that you should learn.

In this video, Vincent discusses one of the most essential yet overlooked shoulder movements: scapular protraction.

Scapular PROTRACTION, simply put, is the act of gliding your shoulder blade forward on your rib cage.

This inherently involves getting your shoulder blade FLUSH on your RIB CAGE (as opposed to letting it to "FLARE" or "WING" off).

If you lack the ability to get your scapula FLUSH on your RIB CAGE, then the rest of your shoulder complex will be UNSTABLE. Attempting to perform upper body exercises over an UNSTABLE SHOULDER results in premature PLATEAUS and INJURIES.

And that's why scapular protraction is one crucial scapular stability exercise that Vincent prefers to teach his clients.

Vincent also discusses a common MISCONCEPTION about scapular protraction.

Rounded shoulders is NOT scapular protraction. ROUNDED SHOULDERS is a combination of 1) ANTERIOR HUMERAL GLIDE (when the upper arm bone excessively glides forward in the socket), 2) excessive SCAPULAR INTERNAL ROTATION (inner edge of shoulder blade comes off the rib cage), and 3) excessive SCAPULAR ANTERIOR TILT (bottom tip of shoulder blade comes off the rib cage).

Again, scapular protraction is simply the shoulder blade gliding forward on the rib cage. This inherently involves the SHOULDER BLADE getting FLUSH on the RIB CAGE. A shoulder blade that knows how to get FLUSH to the RIB CAGE is a shoulder blade that can stabilize. A STABLE SHOULDER BLADE is one of the FOUNDATIONS of upper body strength and injury prevention.
