8. SOUNDBITE (English) Cardinal Stephen Chow, Hong Kong's Bishop and newly-appointed Roman Catholic cardinal:
"It is important that we are connected, we are connected with the church in China, with the Beijing Diocese in China, I think that is important, because we know each other, and we know that we exist, right, but the fact that I went up to Beijing, there are connections, human connections, everything starts with the humanity first, not by structure, not by policy, but human connection. And this time, when Bishop Li Shan comes down to Hong Kong, that is also confirming the human connection. With that connection, we can walk together. We can talk about how to strengthen the structure, how to make some policy, even with the internal policy, in the long term, how would that help us, to witness, for that love of God. I'm not saying this as very abstract thing, love is really the remedy for a lot of problems in the world today."

STORYLINE:
Hong Kong's Bishop and new Cardinal stressed the importance of building relations with the Catholic Church in China, as he took part in a celebration of his new role Saturday.

Stephen Chow presided over the service at Hong Kong's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday afternoon.

His predecessor, Cardinal Joseph Zen was also prominent, standing close to Chow.

Chow made a trip to Beijing in April, the first time a Hong Kong Catholic leader had gone there in thirty years.

Beijing and the Vatican severed diplomatic ties in 1951 following the Communist Party’s rise to power and the expulsion of foreign priests.

Since the break in ties, Catholics in China have been divided between those who belong to an official, state-sanctioned church and those in an underground church loyal to the pope. The Vatican recognizes members of both as Catholics but claims the exclusive right to choose bishops.

The Vatican and China signed an accord in 2018 over the thorny issue of bishop nominations, but Beijing has violated it. Most recently Pope Francis was forced to accept the unilateral appointment of a new bishop of Shanghai.
