Labor’s ‘rushed’ legislation needs to be ‘improved’: James Paterson

Shadow Home Affairs Minister James Paterson slammed Labor’s “rushed” method of processing their new legislation through parliament.

This follows Labor’s proposed policy to impose harsher deportation and entry ban laws for asylum seekers.

“Let’s remember they wanted to rush this legislation through the parliament in 72 hours,” Mr Paterson told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

“We’ve tried to be constructive. We’ve tried to improve the government’s bill.

“We’ve recognized there is a genuine public policy problem here.

“Some people who are not refugees refuse to cooperate with their own deportation and then can languish in Australia for many years after they should.”
