Android | Enable Floating Windows for Apps on LineageOS and AOSP Custom ROMs

I have my daily driver here with the Lineage OS custom ROM installed on it and today I'll be showing you how to enable a floating window mode that can be used for most of your apps and games.

I do want to point out that this is not a feature offered by LineageOS, and instead, it's actually something that is built into AOSP. This means that any custom ROMs based on Lineage OS or AOSP in general will also be able to use a feature like this. I should also say that some apps could get a little buggy with this feature enabled.

So while it may work great with some apps, it may not work so well with others.

To begin, we first need to enable Developer Mode on your device. We can do this with LineageOS by finding the Build Number entry in the About Phone section, and then tapping it 7-10 times until it tells you that you are now a developer.

With that done, we can go back and tap the System option to find the newly revealed Developer Options menu.

Now, we're going to scroll through most of this list until we get to the bottom here, where you'll find the Apps section.

And there are two things that I recommend you enable. The first is the toggle for making all activities be resizable.
Then we want to enable the toggle to enable Freeform Windows on Android

As mentioned here, this feature is experimental which is why I said this will work great with some apps and not so well with others.

With this feature enabled, we're instructed to reboot our smartphone to apply the new changes.

Once your Lineage OS smartphone or tablet has rebooted, we can test this feature by opening up an application that you would like to have in a floating window. With this app opened, now let's bring up the Recents menu so that we can then tap the icon above the app preview that we see here.

Since we have enabled that FreeForm window option within the Developer Options menu, we get a new option to transition this app into a floating window.

We can move this floating window around by dragging it from the border at the top.
And we can also resize this window by dragging it from the corner here at the bottom.

So while this isn't exactly the same as the floating window feature that you see in Samsung's One UI and Xiaomi's MIUI, it is really close.

And with it being built into AOSP, that means we can use it on Lineage OS Google's Pixel UI, and many other devices.

I hope this helped anyone who has wanted to use floating windows on Android. The idea for today's video was based on a comment I received this week from someone who was curious if such a feature was possible.
