Forged Blacksmith Knife 2.0
Full process of forging a classic blacksmith knife out of a roller bearing inner race.
This steel is very hard to forge, even very hot. But it does get very hard after quench! As I've said at the end I tempered this knife for two cycles of 2hrs at 290°C to hopefully prevent cracks from forming after heavy use.
Index of operation and materials:
0:18 I don't know of a better way to open this up, cage looks to be pressed on
0:50 Heat with my trusty old coke forge
1:00 Split the ring with hot cut tool
1:20 Open and distend the material into a strip
1:50 Forge down th shoulders, these are very sharp and tend to fold instead of moving in (with my limited skills) A good option would be to grind them off at this point to have a square and straight piece of steel
2:10 Start the taper forging
2:38 Clean the tip end and bend it down to the edge to prevent too much distortion when forging bevels
2:50 Forge bevels
3:00 Make the scroll, round pliers makes this pretty easy
3:30 Bend the handle into shape
4:20 Decided to dust off my grinding jig since I haven't used it in so long, works well for flat and easy grind like this
5:50 Also gridning edge and tip with 2x72 before heat treatment
6:20 File a choil to start the sharpening well
6:40 Hardening at 840 with oil quench (cold)
7:10 Remove scales and buff with bench grinder so the temper color shows well
7:40 Tempering at 290°C for 2hrs x2 cycles
7:55 Sharpen with slack of the 2x72 belt grinder
8:30 Strop the edge with leather and fine polishing compound
I just started to list some of the stuff I use for my projects in this amazon storefront:
