In the heart of Tuscany and not far from Pisa, there is a small but charming medieval village, famous for its historic buildings and full of ancient legends. Volterra, a fairytale but also mysterious village that will take you back in time.
It is an important Etruscan center (Velàthre, Velathri or Felathri in Etruscan, Volaterrae in Latin language), one of the "twelve cities" of the Etruscan League.
Inside the fourteenth-century walls there are not only medieval and Renaissance buildings. Turning around you will find Romanesque churches and museums, custodians of splendid Etruscan finds, and above all underground paths and hidden places.

✱The city is also famous for the extraction and processing of alabaster. This alabaster, called "chalky", is softer and easier to work with, less specific weight than the "calcareous" one. Perhaps today it is more known and widespread, also thanks to the great skill and resourcefulness of the craftsmen from Volterra.
