Northumberland Surprise Minor at Corby, Northants

An extract from our quarter peal followed by the lower on this “interesting” six, rung from a somewhat squat ground floor ringing chamber. The church was founded in 1300, and a heavy restoration took place in 1900.

Four of the bells were cast by Henry Penn in 1722, and the two trebles by Gillett and Johnston in 1931, at which point the bells were last overhauled. They sound OK at best, although the 3 and 5 individually are very poor bells, and they handle well enough. However, the 5th pulley makes a terrible racket, which is quite offputting. However, during the lower, Katie found that by standing at a right angle, the grinding and grumbling noises disappeared! Most odd.

Tenor 7-3-19 in Bflat
