John C. Frémont: Explorer, General, Politician

John Charles Frémont lived an adventurous and varied life throughout the mid-1800s. This included leading five expeditions to the American West, armed resistance against Mexican occupation of California in the 1840s, running for president as the Republican candidate in 1856, and serving as a general in the Union Army during the Civil War.
