US President Joe Biden says the United States and China are back to "direct and open" military communications after what he called a "constructive" meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco.

But on the sidelines of the summit, Mr Biden dubbed his counterpart a "dictator" in a sign of ongoing tensions between the superpowers.
