Around 9 PM last night, SpaceX began fueling Ship 36 for a full six-engine static fire test at the Massey site. The fueling process stretched all the way until 11:01 PM. But while the ship was still being fueled, it suddenly exploded violently, shattering the stillness of the night.
The blast left the SpaceX team in complete shock. Ship 36 was instantly reduced to a shower of twisted metal, with debris flying everywhere. The explosion didn’t just destroy the vehicle, it also wiped out key infrastructure nearby, including the static fire stand and adjacent fuel tanks. Thick smoke poured into the night sky and continued to rise for hours.
Shortly after the explosion, satellite radar over the Brownsville area quickly detected that a fireball, likely a chunk of metal, had been launched skyward from the McGregor Boca Chica facility, flying northwest toward Santa Monica. Fortunately, no one was injured.

SpaceX later confirmed the incident in a post on X, saying:
"On Wednesday, June 18 at approximately 11 p.m. CT, the Starship preparing for the tenth flight test experienced a major anomaly while on a test stand at Starbase."
They also reassured the public, adding:
"There are no hazards to residents in surrounding communities, and we ask that individuals do not attempt to approach the area while safing operations continue."

Elon Musk declared: Just a scratch
Right at the moment of the explosion, the light flashes upward from the midsection of the vehicle toward the nosecone, suggesting this wasn’t caused by the Raptor engines. That area corresponds to the LCH4 tank.
