Washing Amela - Something Special About a Simple Body Wash

There's something so special about washing a baby, or giving oneself a nice warm wash in a bathtub or shower. For me it has to be warm, whether I was sweating or when it's cold outside - I do warm. So we finally arrive in Butiru, and we meet this precious child we've spend hours looking for. A neighbor who hears we've come to look for her gets shocked that we would come all the way from Bungoma, Kenya for her, and says, "But she won't make it." We rebuke her as expected! We pull into their little yard only to find her lain down in rags, with a swarm of flies on her face and around the dirty rags she's covered in. It's hard to imagine someone is in those rags when we first set our eyes on that spot. It seems as though there's no one there, just some dirty baby shawls on the dry ground, near the kitchen door. But we find her wrapped inside them. She's yawning with saliva running down her chin because of her condition. No one seems to have cared enough to hold her on their thighs or carry her on their backs. But these strangers who just came in seem to know her and she seems to know them already. We're so delighted and have to go and do shopping for her, about ten kilometers away. Upon our return water is warmed on the fire, and little Amela is given that much needed, very well deserved bath before she's wrapped in a clean, good smelling shawl, diapers (although too big for her small body), a nice little skirt from Germany and a top and some pretty socks. Nothing really fits her because of the tiny body, but that's still OKAY, she's clean, she looks pretty and happy. All suddenly, she's become a sensation in the village. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! The wonder gem of the world.
