At 07:41 local time, the E-2D Hawkeye airborne since 06:30 detected two H-6N contacts at 340 nautical miles bearing 315 from USS Nimitz (CVN-68) - 41 minutes before they reached any conceivable weapons release geometry. Four F/A-18E Super Hornets on CAP received updated intercept vectors at 07:46. By 08:23, the lead Super Hornet had visual confirmation of the YJ-21 hypersonic anti-ship missile on the H-6N's centerline hardpoint in operational flight configuration - the first visual confirmation by a US Navy aircrew of that weapon in a live approach profile against a carrier strike group.

The YJ-21 is not a joke. Hypersonic glide vehicle class, estimated range over 1,000 kilometers, terminal velocity at Mach 6 or above. Against a carrier without warning it presents a genuine engagement problem. The SLQ-32 collected a 1.4-second navigation radar emission from the lead H-6N at 08:26 - an operational profile that had not been characterized outside of test-range conditions. The bombers turned north at 08:34, YJ-21s still on their hardpoints, never activating a targeting solution.

The E-2D tracked both contacts from 340 nautical miles inbound to 290 outbound. They were never outside US sensor coverage.
