Over the South China Sea at 0614 hours, two Chinese J-16 strike fighters armed with PL-15 beyond-visual-range missiles scrambled from Fiery Cross Reef to intercept a US Air Force B-52H Stratofortress conducting a freedom of navigation overflight. The J-16 lead aircraft activated its Type 1474 AESA radar in single-target fire control mode at 147 nautical miles from the bomber. Two F-35C Lightning IIs from USS Carl Vinson's air wing had been orbiting unseen at 40,000 feet for 70 minutes. When the APG-81 went active, the J-16s had 44 nautical miles and 7 seconds before their tactical position collapsed. They broke off. The B-52H never changed course.

The F-35Cs were airborne 50 minutes before the J-16 scramble. The Fiery Cross Reef radar installation never detected them. The J-16 crews had no awareness of the escort until the APG-81 activated — at which point both J-16s were already inside the AIM-120D's engagement envelope with fire control solutions computed. The RC-135V conducting a parallel collection mission 180 nautical miles east recorded the complete PL-15 employment sequence in operational detail. China's most capable air-to-air missile never reached a viable firing position.

The PL-15's range only matters if the J-16 reaches a firing position. Two F-35Cs that nobody saw coming made sure it never did.
