Amtrak Derailment Hospital Train

Filmed on June 6, 2020.

On May 29, 2020, Amtrak 7/27 (Empire Builder) collided with the John Deere Tractor/Sprayer in Bainville, MT. The entire train derailed with numerous injuries. The John Deere operator was killed.

A week later, after rerailing the train and sending fresh P42s to go rescue the damaged Amtrak set, Amtrak train A-920-1-05A passed through Minnesota. The fresh P42s towed the damaged train to Beech Grove, where the equipment is repaired or removed from service all together.

From Montana until Minnesota, the train was surprisingly able to make the normal Amtrak speed of 79mph. However, between Big Lake & Becker, a trackside detector discovered a hot axle on locomotive 9. The train stopped just outside of Big Lake for inspection.

After inspection, it was determined the train would limp to BNSF's Northtown Yard in Minneapolis where the diesel shop would make necessary repairs to the locomotive overnight. Now at a reduced speed, it was easy to chase the Amtrak extra as it crawled along at a slow pace.
