This color educational film from Weyerhaeuser Forest Products gives some insight into the 1950s theories of tree farming and conservation. The film examines the "new Paul Bunyan" who is growing and harvesting trees in a highly efficient method.
The film begins showing deer roam the forest as do rams and bears. The lumberman is a tree farmer. A lumberman hacks at a tree with an ax (:06-1:20). Streams flow. Payette River Tree Farm. The new Paul Bunyans must protect trees. Mature trees are to be cut but younger ones are left to grow. Lots of forest footage (1:21-3:28). On a private road, lumberman come in and cut down trees (3:29-4:23). Logs are put onto a railroad car. "Timber!" is yelled and a tree falls after being cut. Tractors and special equipment i used nowadays to transport the logs (4:24-6:49). Trees are cut, packed together, and pulled from the woods. Bound together, the logs are set for transporting (6:50-8:15). While harvesting, trees are also growing for the future. Logs are transported out of the forest on railroad cars across bridges. Logs are dumped into the pond at the mill (8:16-9:45). A boat helps sort through the logs. Each log is reviewed to see what it is best suited for. Over 4000 products are made from wood. In some cases, the bark is sprayed off with high pressured water. Then the clean log moves into the saw mill and cut (9:46-12:04). In the past over 20% of a log couldn't be used but now they use it all. Shots of cutting wood and making lumber. Other pieces of logs are made into wood chips. Some of it is on the way to the pulp mill to be made into paper making parts (12:05-14:20). Some bark is removed and dried. The log is peeled down to a piece of wood. Dried bark is used for glue (14:21-15:12). Remaining pieces are cut to be used as fire wood. Other woods are put into floor products. Pieces of wood are bound and transported (15:13-16:36). The new Paul Bunyan plans to use his tree farm to his best advantage. Aerial shots of a tree mill factory. Research continues. Lumber and wood is used. Wood built America (16:37-18:28). Shots of a forest and then the film ends, no titles at all (18:29-18:50).
