This color educational film is about railroad research and advancements in railroad technology, including the development of the diesel and gas turbine locomotives which were beginning to supplant steam engines at the time. Copyright is 1953. The film stars Hugh Beaumont as E.D. Gillespie. ( Beaumont is best known for his portrayal of Ward Cleaver on the television series Leave It to Beaver.)

Titles: 225,000 Mile Proving Ground (:08-:24). A streamline passenger train races by, probably the Sunset Limited. People sit in a Skyline type dome car or eat in the dining car on a train. People look out of the observation car. A steam powered freight train races by. Flashback to another era: a horse and wagon move slowly. Railroad replaced that. Scenes from the Chicago Railroad Fair show railroad history. A door placard reads: Feature Editor, E.D. Gillespie. Gillespie, who is apparently a magazine article writer, starts talking to the viewer about railroad technological research and development. In a factory, research is being conducted (:25-2:20). Exterior of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Central Research Laboratory, of the Association of American Railroads. A rail is being tested. Chemists in a laboratory. Steel rails examined under microscopes. POV as a train goes down a track. Freight train rides the rails. A train goes down the tracks. A crane from the car moves rails into place for laying the train's tracks. Machines assist bolting the tracks (2:21-4:18). A machine digs into the ground near the tracks. A ballast machine cleans and scoops up dirty ballast. Ballast is hammered into the ground for smooth foundation for the rail tracks. A rail inspection car goes down the rails to make sure the track is good. It has magnets on it and when a section is determined to be in trouble, it is marked for replacement. A train goes down the rails (4:19-6:10). A picture of an old train. E.D. Gillespie speaks to the viewer. A diesel electric locomotive. Baltimore & Ohio diesel locomotive pulls passenger cars (7:00). Train goes by a lake. Union Pacific EMD F-3 (6:07). Gas turbine locomotive turns slowly (6:11-7:56). E.D. Gillespie holds a toy freight car. Modern freight cars race by. Interior of the freight train. Close on the wheels on the rail. A laboratory train goes down the tracks. Close on train brakes stopping. A test is being done on train brakes (7:57-9:55). A laboratory where a 27,000 lb weight is being dropped. A forklift moves a shipment into a railcar. A forklift places a shipment onto a train. Science of package and loading is studied. A test for damage prevention where a railcar is thrust into a wall. A train car hits another car as part of a test. A train goes across tracks with snow in the foreground. A train races by (9:56-12:32). Refrigeration engineers do a test on insulation. A refrigerator car is being set up for a test cross country. The train moves down the tracks. Men stand on top of a railcar. Re-icing station. E.D. Gillespie speaks to the view (12:33-14:10). A man climbs a ladder near a traffic control signal. A signal as seen on the tracks. A man sits in traffic control center and looks at the control board. A track moves and a train comes down the rails. A train terminal. An incoming freight comes in to the station. Cars roll down hill and start to slow in a terminal. A man in the control area watches. Car interchange center. A locomotive races down the track. Man in the control room. Freight train on the tracks. E.D. Gillespie grabs a piece of paper and speaks to the viewer. A locomotive races at the screen (14:11-18:19). End credits (18:20-18:31).
