Food and Control in Slavery, seen in the historical and archaeological records
Using texts from Frederick Douglass's life histories and artifacts recovered from an early archaeological excavation of a slave cabin in Georgia, this video focuses on food and control under slavery – including the use of alcohol. The archaeological work was led by Professors Robert Ascher (Cornell) and Charles Fairbanks (Florida), and was originally published in Historical Archaeology in 1971. This video was originally prepared for use in Cornell's Early College Awareness program.
