Diosa Costello - Bali Hai
Diosa was the first Bloody Mary in the touring company of South Pacific, and later joined the Broadway company as the second person to play the part. She considered this her most challenging role. After rehearsals, the touring company began in Cleveland, OH, in April 1950, crossing the country and setting records for audience and box office in many cities. Diosa joined the Broadway company in May 1951.
The recording here is from the 1975 Gala Tribute to Joshua Logan, at the Imperial Theatre in New York. Diosa came out of retirement as a performer for this event honoring her friend and director in South Pacific, reprising "Bali Hai" and "Happy Talk".
For more information on my work with Diosa, see http://www.gleach.com/fwgDiosa.html . The images here are from my collection, and include programs, press clippings, and photographs. Seen here in the cast, in addition to Diosa, are Ray Walston, Norma Calderon and Robert Whitlow; in the last photograph Ray Walston and Diosa are together at a party, probably in the late 1960s.
