United States government on a ‘ticking time bomb’ ahead of shutdown

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer says the United States government is on a “ticking time bomb” ahead of an impending government shutdown.

Republican Jim Jordan lost a second vote to become US House Speaker but declared his intention to continue his candidacy for the position.

Some members of both parties said they are open to granting additional powers to temporary speaker Patrick McHenry to pass critical funding bills and avert a government shutdown next month.

The former government official called for the Republican Party to “get their act together” and elect a new speaker.

“The question I think is going to be about timing – how soon can they get their act together? How soon can they start funding the government? What does the situation in Israel look like?" he told Sky News host James Morrow.

“There is a lot of variables but the quicker they can get their act together and start focusing on the priorities at hand, i.e. funding a government and getting some of these things done, the better.”
