Russian peacekeepers performed checks on cars passing the checkpoint near the town of Shusha in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, on Sunday.
The peacekeepers are set to inspect the cars and documents of everyone who passes through the checkpoint, with any weapons or ammunition that is found, seized, with the military police or the post commander then bound to begin an investigation through the Federal Security Service (FSS).
Staff Sergeant Pyotr Ivanov, who was on duty at the checkpoint, told journalists that the number of cars arriving has increased compared to the first days of the opening of the Lachin corridor. He noted that the situation in the road section is calm: people return to a peaceful life, transporting families and children.
Following weeks of hostilities, Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a Russian-brokered deal to end the fighting over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
Under the terms of the deal, 1,960 Russian peacekeepers will be deployed in the disputed region to monitor the ceasefire.
