First Impressions of ARTSAKH "Nagorno-Karabakh" - Entering the Republic of Artsakh

On the morning of my sixth incredible day in Armenia, my guide Lusine and I headed to Artsakh, a de facto independent region also known as Nagorno-Karabakh, which isn’t recognized by any other nation on Earth. Come along with us as I give my first impressions of Artsakh after entering the Republic of Artsakh!

I began my day in Yenokavan, Armenia, at the Apaga Resort, where we stayed the previous night. We’d be driving four hours south to Nagorno-Karabakh. While it’s not recognized by many people, its people are mostly Armenian. Along the way, we’d visit some sites and have some food. I couldn’t wait to get started and share my first impressions of Artsakh, or Nagorno-Karabakh!

As we drove, down the mountain on the dirt road from Apaga Resort, we passed by some swineherds and their pigs. We were currently in Tavush Region in northeastern Armenia, the most forested region of the country. There are huge mountains in the area and a town called Ijevan nestled in a valley. Ivejan is the capital of this region, which is very green!

From there, we passed back through Dilijan Tunnel and rode back past Lake Sevan. There are lots of historical sites around the lake including the 9th-century Sevanavank Monastery. There are also lots of hotels! From Lake Sevan, we’d drive around it and enter a canyon that would take us to Nagorno-Karabakh.

We stopped in a flat, farmland area to eat breakfast, including bread, eggs, ham, butter, sour cream, and cheese. There were also some sweet cookies. The sour cream was less sour and more like American sour cream. Everything was super fresh!

I made an egg, ham, and cheese sandwich, which was so good! It was easier to eat this way, on the road, than to stay and eat at the Apaga Resort.

Then, one of my guides from Armenia Travel joined us, and we hit the road to continue our journey. We were about halfway there. We stopped about 30 minutes later to see the lake at a simple, barren beach. It’s beautiful but it was too chilly to swim this time of year. The best swimming season is in August.

I learned on the drive that when Alexander the Great passed through this area, he had a battle with Armenia on the border of Armenia and Persia. The Armenian military pushed him back and he left Armenia alone as he continued on his way to India.

We followed the Karvajar Corridor to the border, where Lusine filled out a form to get me a visa so I could enter the country! Artsakh was the original, historical name of Nagorno-Karabakh, which dates back to the 2nd century BC.

My first impressions of Artsakh, or Nagorno-Karabakh, is that it was very wild and beautiful. We passed through a really tight gorge with huge rocks on either side, trees, and the road was rally thin. There was also a river! It was so different from Armenia.

After arriving in Nagorno-Karabakh, we tried a local, traditional bread called jingalov. It means “bunch of greens.” They use 17 types of local greens in it. They tasted like spinach and kale. It’s super light and healthy. I loved it! It was the greenest bread I’d ever had!

What an epic morning! After giving my first impressions of Artsakh, or Nagorno-Karabakh, I couldn’t wait to spend the next 36 hours there.

Special thanks to my friends at Armenia Travel for their kindness, hospitality, and for arranging my trip. I couldn’t have done it without them!
