The Worst Cars People Still Loved: Edsel vs DeSoto

One had a gearshift in the steering wheel. The other set a sales record that stood thirty one years.

The 1958 Edsel is the most famous flop in American car history: pushbutton gears in the steering wheel hub, a mocked grille, about 63K sold against a 200K target. The 1958 DeSoto Fireflite leaked and rusted its way out of a loyal following as the 1958 recession gutted the mid price brands.

Yet DeSoto's 1929 debut set a US first year sales record, 81K cars, that stood until the Ford Falcon broke it in 1960.

The Edsel is a Ford. Both brands were gone within a few years, and both are prized by collectors today.

Shitboxes We Loved 💩📦 No. 1, Edsel vs DeSoto. Share it with someone who still loves the underdogs.
