The Chevy Cheetah Built to Kill the Shelby Cobra

Chevrolet's answer to the Cobra was so extreme the driver sat almost behind the engine, with no driveshaft at all.

The Bill Thomas Cheetah was built with quiet GM backing to beat Carroll Shelby's Ford powered Cobra on track, which earned it the nickname the Cobra killer.

It ran about 450 pounds lighter than a small block Cobra, with the transmission bolted almost straight to the rear axle.

Then GM pulled support. Barely a dozen were ever finished, and the Cobra it was built to bury became the blue chip icon while the Cheetah became a what if.
