USMC F7F Tigercat Korean War C-54 medevac Seoul, September 1950 Airailimages NARA National Archives
Here's gritty B-roll film footage from the Korean War. Notes with the film date it from September 21 through 23, 1950, when U.S. Marines were instrumental in retaking Seoul from North Korean occupiers. It was a grim time, just months into the fighting after North Korean troops successfully drove far south beginning in June of that year.
The Marines' 10th Corps held a change of command captured on camera. And Marine Corps F7F Tigercats were armed for ground attack sorties. The presence of C-54 Skymaster transport planes near Seoul shows the crews exercising a fundamental and useful tenet of airlift, delivering needed supplies including drums of aviation gasoline for combat near the front, and then flying back to safe rear areas carrying medevac patients in need of treatment.
Jeeps and trucks in this film may be part of the salvaged abandoned equipment the Marines prudently brought back from the Pacific with the end of World War II. Given a coat of paint and USMC markings, this treasure would serve the Marines well early in the Korean war.
The war in Korea would linger for three more years, ending in an uneasy truce that exists to this day.
This historic film is just one brief episode from millions of feet of motion pictures in the National Archives. Three-quarters of a century has passed since this was made, and some of the faces looking back at us from the screen are no longer with us. May this footage keep them present in our thoughts as we study vignettes of that long-ago conflict.
