Navy P2V Neptune ditches beside Coast Guard ship in Atlantic; Crew Rescued

The waves look cold and menacing as they roll beneath a stricken Navy P2V Neptune over the Atlantic Ocean on February 27, 1953. Smoke streams from one of the Neptune's engines as seen from the deck of the Coast Guard cutter-turned-seaplane-tender Coos Bay.
The Neptune ditches and breaks in two, the nose going under as the wing flashes the national star insignia above the wavetops. Coast Guardsmen get to the scene in a launch, and rescue the 10-man crew who are happy the ship was at Ocean Station Echo, about half-way between Bermuda and the Azores.
