Why Being Around Smart People Makes You More Productive

We learn from people around us through active learning and passive imitation to fit in. Peer effects in team productivity studied in experimental psych, social psych, management, and real-world economics settings. Favorite example: grocery store checkout workers—when productive person works shift, workers next to them become more productive. People rise to productivity level around them and also descend to it, learning "how we do things around here." These peer effects mean it's good for less productive people to be around more productive people because they're pushed to strive and learn.⁣
