King Carl XIV Gustav's Lindsborg Visit - April 17, 1976
Today, we look back on April 17, 1976, and bicentennial celebrations of the United States in Lindsborg.
This newly digitized film footage from the museum collection is particularly focused on a very special part of that year's festivities - a visit from the King of Sweden... King Carl XVI Gustaf.
At 78, he is still King of Sweden today and the longest-reigning monarch in Swedish history.
At the time of this footage, he was less than three years into his reign. He was treated to a performance of Handel's Messiah, as well as Swedish dancing and music in front of the 1904 World's Fair Swedish Pavilion, which had been moved to the museum just seven years previous in 1969
(The Pavilion had a very different look then. Recent restoration efforts - including exterior paint, porch repair, and window replacement - have been to bring it more in line with its original 1904 appearance in St. Louis.)
This is the first in a series of newly digitized multimedia archives in the Old Mill Museum collection! This digitization cost is being covered thanks to a $7,000 small Nutt Grant to the Smoky Valley Historical Association through the McPherson County Community Foundation!
Look for more to come soon!
