A fun day chasing a few kahawai in the Anchovy schools for the smoker with a few snaps on the side..
Sometimes it's just all about a bit of fun
Mid - late Summer through to mid autumn and sometimes even longer, normally means anchovy schools will be making their way into the inner Gulf in big numbers. They then get pushed into little bays and coves by schools of kahawai, kings and snapper then the birds let us know it's time to head out to catch a few kahawai for the smoker.
Pea was keen for some smoked Kahawai so the plan was to head north side of whanga's, we knew the Anchovy schools should be in there stuck while getting pushed south. That whole northern side is a great trap for these fish and that means plenty of kahawai for the taking. Upon launching mid morning we could see birds scattered right across the bay. Turns diving with the odd Gannet and the usual 100's of shearwater racing after the schools, the whole bay was alive with 3-4 huge patches of fish working. Heading out we just had to pick one and start working it, Pea was going to start with a little micro jig and me the trusty old Zman softbait.
Heading into one of the bays we started a drift among the shearwater and Pea was pretty much instantly hooked up, we were only in 3mtrs of water but when it comes to fishing Anchovy schools that doesn't really matter. Pea's first fish of the day on the little micro was a small snapper that went back, with the shearwater sitting quietly on the water and a lot more commotion up the back of the bay I fired up the little fc and headed for the action. Coming into birds working and big bubble ups Pea dropped his jig while we slowly trolled, it didn't take long before the jig was again ingulfed. Pea was hoping for a Kahawai being the main reason why we were here and with birds everywhere and kahawai bubbling he had his first solid kahawai for the bin.
I hadn't even set my rod up and Pea was flicking out and hooking into Kahawai left right and center, we even had a king turn up busting up some Kahawai right next to the boat. Seeing that I had to have a bit of a troll around with the Savage deep diver, Pea switched over to a big 7" softie to troll as well. No kings were interested but Pea was once again hooking into more Kahawai, coming into some nice looking sign on the sounder I was hopping it was snapper so I could get to take home some fish as well. We decided to start a drift and I at last was flicking out the Zman. The sounder said snapper and on my first cast that what I caught, we stayed on the drifts for the rest of the day chasing snaps. With the wind offshore and the schools heading into shore, we would race ahead of them catch a few snapper and kahawai over 100mtrs then head back up and do it all again.
There was so much fish and just about every cast resulted in a snapper for me while Pea still hit the Kahawai the odd snapper for the bin. There were about 4 separate workups going on in the bay all day, which held snapper and kahawai for us. Nothing big snapper wise with most going 33-35cm with the odd 40 and my better one going close to 50cm. Pea had plenty of Kahawai for the smoker and after dropping another couple snapper each in the bin we called it a day and an absolute fun one at that.
The little fc lucky charm got us onto the fish once again and it was great to see so much kahawai in the one area - Pea had a blast and it's always great to get out there to get a line wet with him.
