Alert level 3 chasing fish from the shore
With us Auck's back into alert level 3 the fishing can become a little more hard when it comes to catching fish as we are limited to the shore, this time of year the weather is a little chillier so we venture out during the day when it's at it's warmest. Some places can produce on days like that but to better your chances it is those magic hours that can put a feed on the table.
Although I had been doing quite well with my night fishing over the past few weeks, I was keen to head out on a nice warm windless winters day. I love days like this, calm, quiet and clear water but it can be hard to fish them that's for sure. The plan was to meet up with Pea and make our way out to a spot we have been learning to fish, it can hold good fish to. We know this because we have caught them in the boat near by and during the day to. It was a little hike in to the spot and we arrived half tide, we have learn't not to get there any earlier if fishing this precise spot as the fish just aren't there until then.
I decided to take a couple of rods with me this time, I was going to run a dropper on both but one with standard J's and the other with a re-curve I could just leave for the fish to hook it's self. Being half tide we started at the waters edge, Pea managed a nice little Kahawai which would turn into bait - well one side bait the other Pea's lunch. As the tide drops we get closer to the channel and end up on a nice flat sandstone platform. Once on there we know we can reach the channel and like most fish use to travel along mooching for food. Flicking out our first baits from here resulted in a lot more bites, they weren't big bites or hits and I was very surprised to pull in our first Snapper at around 25cm.
This time of year they have normally gone but like most places sometimes small fish hang around even in those colder months, normally if the bigger fish are there you will catch them first. They probably hear the commotion and come in bowl the smaller fish out the way and smash the bait. There was a lot of these smaller bites at first and I was thinking maybe they were Gurnard which we were hoping for as well. The tide was still running then my rod bent over, this one had the re-curve hook so I picked it up and just raised the rod and I was onto our first good fish. It wasn't big but it was good to feel something better. I could tell by the nodding it was a good snap, it was a fun little tussle and out of the gloom popped a nice pan size snap around 50cm.
Pea was next to hook up, there must of been a little school of them come by as it was pretty much straight away. It was another nice little snap around 45cm this time - Pea was pretty stoked. I flicked out a fresh bait quickly as sometimes they only bite a short time - not much was happening with my other rod that was sitting closer in so I wound it up to throw into the channel. My other rod was twitching already and to the true re-curve hook I was into another fish. This one felt a little different and sure enough I could see bright orange, yea boy we had our first carrot. It was all go as my Nanomatrix buckled over and stayed bent, this one was a lot better fish and even pulled a little line. As it hit the edge of the channel (this is where we can lose fish) I slowly pumped the rod and dragged it up over the lip.
This one was a solid snap at around 65-70cm, it is a lot of fun catching nice fish from the shore and the funny thing is if we weren't in alert 3 we would be out in the boat somewhere. Sliding my fish up I went to give it a measure then something grabbed my other rod - Pea ran down and lifted slowly and he was now hooked up to another nice fish. Being my rod was it my fish or Pea's being the fighter - it didn't matter it was awesome to see the smile on the dial....it's good to see a mate hooked up and enjoying life. It was another fish at around 50cm which made it's way to the bin. The tide was rising fast and we were starting to get pushed back, I had to give the old rod a good heave-hoe to make the channel. We caught a couple more carrots before we couldn't make the channel anymore and being a bit quiet we called it a day and what a day it was - not a lot of fish but 4 good snaps 45-65cm and 2-3 nice fat gurnard was plenty for us.
The plan had come together nicely and it was good to get onto some good fish from the shore - alert 3 is a pain but when being forced out of the boat it's great to be able to still get out there in among-st it.
Keep safe guys and tight lines
