Putting fishing the full moon phase to the test - how hard is the fishing

A fun catch up fish with Stevo and putting fishing on a full moon phase to the test.....

It had been awhile since getting a line wet with Stevo and he was coming up from Tauranga for a few days, so we thought it was time for a catch up fish. We had a full moon phase over that time so I thought it would be a great idea to put this full moon fishing to the test. You hear a lot of different remarks regarding fishing the full moon with most of it pointed as a bad time to fish, I think it is really more one of those usual fisho lines when the fishing is hard - oh it must have been the full moon phase. Personally I have done quite well on a full moon during the day and also on the rise. We were in the start to the middle of the moon phase but were planning to be back at the ramp on dark due to the tides, I've herd plenty of people talking about how hard the fishing was through the day so we were going to put this scenario to the test. The forecast was a little up and down with light winds in the morning going 10knts and showers in the arvo but at least stevo doesn't mind getting his hair wet unlike some one else I fish with....

With the light winds in the morning the plan was to flick a few softies around to start with - if the fishing was going to be hard maybe the softies looking like bait fish may entice a few hook ups. It was a beaut morn with mirror like conditions and we did actually land a few fish in 2-3mtrs of water. With a couple in the bin and although the fishing did go a little quite on us, so far the so called bad fishing on the full moon wasn't affecting us. The wind and a few little front's started to come through so we decided to head to another spot and anchor up for a strayline sesh, normally I would drop the berley also but I thought seems we were trialing the fishing lets start with out it and see what happens. Sometimes the berley can bring small fish around so if you start with out it and you get good fish to start with I like to leave it out until they either quieten off or some smaller fish move in - this is when by dropping the berley it can bring those bigger fish back on the bite or keep them at the boat longer.

We pretty much caught fish instantly even with out berley - berley is a very big ingredient for us where we fish and helps us get into some nice fish most times. There were a lot of smaller fish about with the odd better fish in between - lots of 35-40cm fish which really isn't to bad and it was throwing that bad full moon fishing out the window. We constantly caught fish even if they were of smaller size. We decided to drop the berley after an hour, which brought a few better fish around but nothing of great size. After pulling up a few more 35-45cm fish while the fronts kept coming through we decided to move to one more spot I like to fish on a certain tide. We decided to drop the berley straight away this time and after a couple mins we were onto some nicer fish which was closer to that 50cm - we added a couple of these better models to the bin.

Over all it turned out to be a pretty epic day with fish pretty much on the bite the whole time. Can it be hard fishing on the full moon? yep just like any other day that could be hard, but for me the great day we just had put the full moon bad fishing scenario to bed.
